Family Photography

"It's a weird world right now" is how Ali's most recent email started.

There can be no doubting it.

She first got in touch mid-February, not long after I took these family photos, asking if I would take some pictures of her parents. Ali explained they have lived in the same house for a good many years but that she didn't have many pictures of them together.

She mentioned that one of her parents might take a little more work to come around to the idea. But I like a challenge and we set a date.

So many things have changed, in such a very short space of time. Looking back on these photos, almost feels like a lifetime ago when, in fact, it was just weeks ago.

But isn't that the point of family photography? Life does change and so very quickly. None of us can know what is just around the corner. But having photos to look back on, to help us to relive those memories, is the power of it.

I won't wax lyrical anymore, I've done that elsewhere. Suffice to say, if you feel like photos of your family are important to you, I'd love to hear from you.

For now, I will leave you with these extremely kind words from Ali and if you'd like to know more, please get in touch:

I have just looked through the photographs, and it's hard to explain what I feel when I see them - you have managed to catch the loveliest moments of my family, in a way that makes you forget you are looking at pictures and not at the actual people.

It's extremely moving to see candid photos of my parents together, in the place they've called home for so many decades, which they love.  And yes, you're right - we got far more smiles out of Pa than anticipated!

You were just brilliant at putting them at their ease, and you were so unobtrusive when sneaking the shots in without them noticing.  Also, the photos you took of their studies, giving a little insight into their worlds, were a terrific touch.

I'm so glad we got the photographs done by you, and I'm delighted with the results.  And I'm so glad you were happy to sit on the floor, surrounded by dogs, and eat cake!

I love dogs. I love cake. I love making pictures of people. A perfect day - enjoy!

A few years ago I photographed a wedding at Hautbois Hall for a truly wonderful couple.

It was the kind of wedding where I just really clicked with the people and felt like I was photographing the wedding of close friends. In fact, I remember being asked by one of the guests at this wedding how long I'd know the bride and groom. She had picked up on this same vibe and was surprised to learn that I hadn't met them before that day.

Fast forward a few years and this wonderful couple have become a beautiful family of four.

Spending time with them again, a few weeks ago for their family photography, felt just as easy going, fun and relaxed, as their wedding day.

We started the day over coffee, eggs and bacon which, isn't a prerequisite to these shoots but certainly helped to give me the energy to keep up with their little ones.

We spent the morning catching up about their wedding day. We shared stories and memories,  talked about their favourite wedding photos and made new photos. Photos of them just being together, mosty simple things, like breakfast together, playing with toy cars, make believe, books and cuddles. Simple but full of magic. And pictures which, I hope, will also become new family favourites.

It was over all too quickly but from the message Nicola sent me after the shoot, I'm hoping it won't be too long before we all catch up again.

"They're absolutely incredible. Totally overwhelmed. Thank you so so so so much. Really we will treasure them forever [...] We've said that we'd like to do it every few years now as the children grow and we wouldn't dream of going to anyone else, you really are so naturally gifted in capturing the essence of a scene. Your photos are so much more than a still."

Family photography is a natural progression from my wedding photography. And when my couples allow me to back into their lives to photograph their family, it means more to me than receiving any number of Thank you cards, cake, gin or whisky (albeit, all of the afore mentioned items are very much appreciated)!

Truth be told, I haven't really been out of Lucy and Elliott's lives. They have been some of my biggest cheerleaders since I photographed their Hales Hall wedding in 2016. I have photographed several of their friends weddings, including a recent wedding at Hunters Hall. I also photographed Elliott's sister's wedding at Southwood Hall last Summer and will be catching up to the whole family for his brother's wedding in 2020! These guys are basically like family to me so, this shoot was about as far removed from hard work as is possible. They are just the most genuinely lovely people and I always knew they were going to make a lovely little family of their own. So, spending a morning with them and their gorgeous little boy recently, was a real treat!

"We have known Rob for just over three years now. He was our wedding photographer and provided us with the best memories we could ever ask for from our day. We are always complimented on our wedding photos! So, when we had our first baby there was no doubt that we wanted to have a family photography shoot with Rob. He came to our house and we just went about our normal activities, feeding, reading, playing! The photos Rob managed to get, just from a normal day in our life, are so gorgeous. They really just represent us as a family and captured such precious moments. I couldn't recommend him more as your photographer for either your wedding or as a family photographer. The natural photos are simply stunning and ones we will treasure forever. Thank you Rob, you're the best!!!"

I'm looking forward to catching up to another two of my previous wedding couples to photograph their families this Easter. If you're looking for family photography in Norfolk or, further afield, if you'd like to capture some of your own family memories, then, whether I've photographed your wedding or not, I'd love to hear from you!

A huge thanks to Lucy and Elliott for a wonderful shoot, some great coffee and some fantastic eats. Here's just a few of my faves with some of my faves - enjoy!

What an afternoon this was - kicking leaves, playing in the garden, racing round in wheelbarrows, jumping on trampolines and playing in the sandpit. I even found time to take some photos of this gorgeous family doing the same. Just kidding - I worked really hard, not that they were really hard work at all! They were really easy going, the children were awesome and as a family they were loads of fun to hang out with on this late Autumn afternoon - can't wait to catch up with them all again soon.

Here's what mum had to say ...

"Holy Macaroni!

Rob, the 'teaser' gallery is simply jaw dropping. We all can't stop watching the slideshow - you've captured our life so beautifully and we can't thank you enough. Really, we feel all warm and fuzzy right now. Can not wait to see the rest, in fact we can't believe there is more. You seem to have captured shots, that we didn't even know you were photographing... amazing!

Huge thanks again"

And here's just a very small selection of what we got up to. If you'd like to book your family photography in Norfolk or further afield or, simply find out a little more, get in touch, I'd love to hear from you! ?

Award Winning Family Photographer

Documentary Family Photography

I was absolutely stoked to learn that I won an award from the Family Photojournalist Association this month!

Creating images for families that captures something of who they are and which, will be shown to future generations, is why I love family photography. Doing this through documentary photography allows me to show the true personality behind the people in front of my camera.

If you're looking for a family photographer in Norwich, to tell your family story, I'd love to hear from you! And if you're looking for some more recent work, check out this blog post of some documentary family photography in Norfolk!

Norfolk Family Photography | A Sparkling Glitter Makeover

A Christmas Glitter Makeover and Party for Maisie

A couple of days ago, I was contacted by the lovely Chantal looking for some help with a little Christmas present she was putting together for a special young lady and her family. Maisie and her friends were given a surprise glitter makeover by the amazing duo that makeup Lacquer and Rouge. Chantal was looking for a local photographer to capture the surprise. It was a little last minute but I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to spend some time with Emily and Amy who are always great fun at weddings and who I hadn't seen as much of this year as I'd have liked. I'm so glad I did because I also got to meet Maisie, her family and #TeamAwesome!

Maisie, from Spixworth near Norwich, was diagnosed with a brain tumour at the age of 10 years old. Now 12, I'm sure each day must be quite the struggle at times, to say the least but meeting Maisie and her family on this occasion you would not have known it. Smiles, laughter and jokes in abundance on this particular evening and the girls and even Darryl, Maisie's dad, looked amazing in their glitter!

There is no doubt that Maisie, for someone so young, has been through more than she should ever have had to contend with. But she and her family do it all with a smile on their faces and an amazingly awesome and positive attitude. A lesson to us all.

If you're reading this and you can find it in your heart to help this young lady by donating to Team Awesome then follow this link to an amazing Just Giving page, trying to raise some money toward a new Wheelchair for Maisie.  It'd be a fabulous Christmas gift!

Here's what Maisie's mum had to say:

What a truly amazing afternoon! When Chantal said she wanted the surprise Maisie and her two friends we never imagined quite so much glitter - well, Darrell didn’t!! Trying to make life normal for Maisie, whatever normal is, making her smile and keeping her friends involved is so important. Up until 2 years ago, Maisie did what every healthy 10 year old did, she danced, she did gymnastics, brilliant family holidays and had a general love of life but this was all taken away in the blink of an eye on 4th February 2016. We are so unbelievably grateful to still have Maisie here with or without her being able to walk. She still loves life and has faced everything thrown at her with a beautiful smile. We are so proud of our AWESOME girl and it’s the little things like this which we will remember forever! Thank you again to Chantel, Emily, Amy and especially Rob for stepping in at the last minute and capturing these amazing memories???? you can follow Maisie’s journey via our Team Awesome Facebook page.

Thanks for reading this far. If you are looking for family photography in Norfolk, get in touch and enjoy the pics.

Wishing you all an amazing Christmas and a very Happy New Year :)

Maternity Photography at Bassmead Manor Barns

Maternity Photography in Cambridge

Carly and Stuart – future mummy and daddy – wanted some pregnancy pictures to remember this special time in their lives. They married a couple of years ago at Bassmead Manor Barns and chose to return to their wedding venue in Cambridgeshire for some maternity photos.

Carly and Stuart brought their dog, Rusty along for a walk and although a little cold and sometimes a bit drizzly, you couldn’t stop these guys from smiling. It was really lovely to meet up with them again and after a leisurely walk around Bassmead Manor Barns, we went back to their home to look over their wedding photographs and eat mince pies – a perfect afternoon!

Carly and Stuart – huge thanks for choosing me to take your bump photos (and a massive thanks to Pete Henderson without whom I’d have never met these two). You’re going to be amazing parents and I’m so excited for what you have ahead of you and can’t wait to meet the little one.

If you are looking for maternity photography in Norfolk or further afield then get in touch – enjoy!

Norfolk Wedding Photography | A Postcard from July & August

A roundup of wedding photography in Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.

We’re through some of the main wedding season now and I thought I’d grab a few images together from the past couple of months. I’ve already featured some of this year’s earlier weddings on a little video over here and all of these weddings will hit the blog in their own right at some point soon(ish). I still have a good number of weddings left, up until November and so it may be a little while yet before they all get the full-feature treatment! But here, for now, is a little diary entry, a postcard from July and August.

This isn’t in any particular order … just a random collection of some of the things I’ve been up to on the weddings front! I've worked at some absolutely wonderful, quirky and unusual wedding venues in Norfolk

Most recently, I ended August with two weddings on the Bank Holiday weekend. Two weddings, two wonderful couples and three beautiful ceremonies! That’s right three into two. Saturday was Holly and Jamie’s incredibly laid back and intimate ceremony at the gorgeous Hautbois Hall, (you can see a previous wedding at Hautbois Hall here) then Abha and Kai’s English and Indian Fusion Wedding at the stunning Chippenham Park, a Country House wedding venue in Cambridgeshire. They had a traditional English civil ceremony, followed by a Hindu ceremony later the same day! You can see more of that Chippenham Park Wedding here. You’ll note that unusually for a Bank Holiday, the weather was pretty amazing! …

Closer to home for me was the wedding of Lisa and Tom and their Norwich wedding at Hush Venues. A little rain but a lot of laughs at this wonderful, secluded woodland setting in the Norfolk countryside. A wedding that has also made me seriously consider a PacMan suit! ...

Hush Venues, Norfolk

The end of July saw me on another double header weekend. The Saturday saw me at the wedding of Chloe and Danny for a church ceremony and DIY back garden wedding in Suffolk. An all out amazing day that ended with a little rain but which didn’t stop an incredible fireworks dispaly! This time I was joined by the, highly-recommended, Andrew Collin, Buckinghamshire Wedding Videographer.

The Norfolk Mead, another venue just around the corner from me, played host to the wedding celebrations of Louise and Charles on the Sunday. Copious amounts of coffee at the morning preparations (with a little brandy for good measure, courtesy of Louise’s father-in-law) and some brilliant company, set me up for the day ahead. This one resulted in one of my favourite confetti shots ever…

The Red Barn was the venue of choice for Jenna and Claire in mid July. A wedding at the Red Barn is an absolutely barn-storming (get it) event. We made some beautiful portraits and they ripped it up on their first dance …

Red Barn, Norfolk

July began with the church wedding of George and Alex and a celebration on the family farm. While August began with Lucy and Henry’s church ceremony on the beautiful North Norfolk Coast and a reception close by to Morston quay. Two wonderfully laid back days with two wonderfully laid back couples.

A Norfolk Farm Wedding

Kyle and Mandy had their wedding at Langley Abbey. A wonderful couple they laughed and joked the whole day through. And Mandy most certainly took the prize, this year, for latest Bridal arrival but then, as we all know, that's the bride's prerogative! Good times and a pleasure to work with talented Norfolk based Wedding Videographer, Mike Savory! ...

Langley Abbey, Norfolk

Last but by no means least was a cracking half-day session of family photography in Norfolk with the Williamson family. Jason and Claire and their two gorgeous kids. A relaxed, informal family photography session around their holiday home before a little trip to Stiffkey for a pub lunch and ice-cream chasers!

Informal Family Photography in North Norfolk

That’s all from me for now. I have a weekend off to look forward to with my beautiful wife for an early celebration of our wedding anniversary. Then it’s back into the weddings with another double header weekend, a Georgian Townhouse wedding and a wedding at the Old Hall, Ely.

Hope you enjoyed the round-up!

Norfolk Family Photography | The Williamsons

Informal Family Photography in North Norfolk

Claire and Jason and their two little ones were holidaying along the North Norfolk coast over the school holiday and originally got in touch for norfolk family photography down at Holkham bay. On the day, the wind was pretty wild and I, with my cameras in mind and Claire, with her children in mind, decided that we did not want to "sandblast" either of them. And so, her little girl suggested that I come to their holiday cottage and spend the morning there! It was a fantastic day, just spending time in the family's company, chatting, relaxing and exploring in the garden before a big pub lunch and ice cream chasers! That's the rules on holiday "ICE CREAM EVERY DAY!", in fact, it might even be the law.

A huge thanks to the Williamsons for inviting me into their lives for a few hours and to their little girl for the flowers she picked me as well as for the fantastic pic she took of me and her dad (second from the end)! It was great fun and I'm so pleased they enjoyed their images ...

"They're incredible! Thank you so so much! A massive thank you!" - Claire & Jason

Here's just a selection from their day - enjoy
