What better way to present the ring than in a beautiful seashell, perhaps on your favourite beach?
This high-risk tactic would require lots of planning, from remembering where you placed the shell to ensuring no one else picks it up for a new piece of home decoration. This how I proposed to my wife at Holkham, so, if you need any tips, let me know!
Fortunately for you, if you don’t fancy spending hours combing the beach for the perfect shell, many retailers now offer ring boxes designed to look like it’s just been picked up off the beach.
The seashell option allows you to get creative with how you present the ring.
Set a challenge to see who can find the prettiest shell, or simply strategically place it, ‘find’ it, and hand the special shell to your soon-to-be betrothed.
In the Christmas decorations
The most wonderful time
Incorporate some added Christmas magic to your decorating efforts this year and present the ring in a personalised ornament or decoration.
You might consider using a DIY advent calendar, leaving the ring behind door number 24 for maximum suspense. Remember not to neglect the other days, however, as a few empty pockets could lead your partner to lose interest by Christmas Eve.
Alternatively, you could opt for the more reliable tree decoration approach. Whether you choose to add the special ornament when you first decorate the tree, or wait until the big day to modify the tree, this option could make for an intimate and romantic moment to signify the start of your lives together.
Terrified of a public proposal? An added bonus to this particular method is you will be doing it in the comfort of your own home, making it the perfect choice for the more introverted couple.

In a favourite book
For the book worms
Perhaps you have a favourite poem or book you wish to include in the proposal process. In this most inconspicuous of methods, all that’s required is for your partner to read the chosen passage, before turning the page to reveal the ring.
What’s more, if you’re stuck for words when it comes to the proposal, find a poem that says all the things you want to say and your partner will do the rest!
Another romantic way to ask the question is by strategically placing the ring in a photo album. Whether you want to retell your story together from the very beginning, or pick out a few particularly meaningful moments, flicking through some special pictures could be the perfect preamble to your proposal speech. How could they possibly say no?
It’s worth noting, if you go for the book, it might be worth investing in a new copy, since you may have to hollow out some of the pages to avoid the ring falling out.
With the help of your pet
What better way to pull at your partner’s heartstrings?
Using a dog, as an example, you could tie the ring to a ribbon attached to your dog’s collar. For a particularly memorable wake-up call, bring the dog into the bedroom so your partner wakes up to see the collar over breakfast in bed.
A more adventurous way would be to get a new puppy but only if this is something you have been thinking about together already. Owning a dog is a big commitment in and of itself! If this was always on the cards though, posing the question while your partner holds your brand new puppy for the very first time could make for an especially romantic proposal. Just make sure she’s not so enamoured with the new family member that she overlooks the ring you’ve painstakingly picked out.
