Capturing the Magic of Back Garden Weddings in Norfolk

Not everyone wants the huge fanfare, pomp, circumstance and excessive admin that comes with a wedding. Some couples like to keep it simple, personal and intimate.

What better place to throw a wedding, in that case, than your own back garden? (Or your parents, or grandparents or whoever you know that has a lovely garden!) It’s a charming opportunity to create a memorable event in the comfort of a familiar setting. As a photographer working in Norfolk, I know there’s a LOT of stunning areas that people literally have on their back doorstep.

Picturesque landscapes, quaint countryside, beach views and historic charm make it an ideal location for intimate, personal weddings. I personally love shooting a Norfolk back garden wedding. There’s so many opportunities for amazing photos. It’s a special kind of magic.

Something relaxed and personal surrounded by the beauty of nature? What a perfect way to celebrate your love and host the most important day of your life so far. Some people are even lucky enough to be related to farmers - it is Norfolk after all! And you know what that means? Borrow a barn!

Not to forget the massive advantages of shooting outdoors. Natural light adds to the warm, ethereal feel of garden weddings and makes the photos even more breathtaking. Another fun thing is the opportunity for candid and authentic moments. These tend to happen anyway, but there’s a lot of scope for them in informal and relaxed settings. The atmosphere means your photographer can offer a stress-free schedule for group shots, portraits and capture more natural moments - and no one feels rushed! (Which is common at more formal weddings.)

Something that we must consider as Britons… You know what I’m going to say. The potential for *unpredictable* weather. Don’t let it put you off if it’s your dream - you just have to factor it into the plan. A backup like a marquee or nearby indoor space is always a good idea and can be a great opportunity for beautiful photos. Honestly, rainy, stormy and cloudy weather can make for some stunning photos, too. What you need is a photographer who is good at adapting! I wonder where you’ll find one of those…

Open space and natural surroundings give you more freedom to experiment with unique angles and compositions. Whether it’s capturing the exchange of vows with a garden in full bloom behind, or long, sweeping shots of the reception, the natural beauty of the outside can lend itself to truly artistic and creative photographs. Make sure you pick a good time of year for the vibe you want - whether it’s Spring for floral blooms, Summer for the vibrant greenery, or Autumn for the changing leaves! Each season brings its own unique atmosphere.

Back garden weddings in Norfolk are such a special experience for couples, and I love photographing them! If you’re considering a setting like this, get in touch to discuss your big day and how I can capture the vision. (I’m also happy to offer any advice I have from working them in the past!)
