Wedding Venues in Norfolk

Looking for a wedding venue in Norfolk? Well keep reading! It used to be said that Norwich had a pub for every day of the year and a church for every week. In 21st Century Norwich, you certainly won’t struggle to find somewhere to enjoy a pint, or, two, nor, a church to be married in; Norwich has more than 30 medieval churches within the old city walls alone as well as being home to two cathedrals. In the heart of the city stands a magnificent medieval cathedral boasting the second tallest spire (at 96m, or, 315ft) as well as the largest surviving cloister in England. On the outer edges of the city centre, at one of the highest points in Norwich, stands the second largest Catholic cathedral in the United Kingdom.

If you fancy being wed somewhere other than church or, you are simply looking for a wedding reception venue, other notable buildings in Norwich include the Georgian Townhouse and the nearby Assembly House. The Georgian Townhouse has spent time as a school house, a war time hospital and a hotel. It was refurbished in 2015. It has a somewhat offbeat, modern character yet, it retains much of it’s chic Georgian charm as well.  The Assembly House in the city centre is a resplendent example of Georgian assembly rooms with a fascinating history. The house as it stands today was designed by the architect Thomas Ivory (1709-1779); used as a ‘House of Assemblies’ for the Norwich gentry, it has been used to host a wealth of events and famous people – so why not join the club?

Situated on the River Wensum, Norwich boasts 150 green spaces within the city itself, including 23 parks, 59 natural areas and nature reserves and 10 kilometres of riverside walks, all of which can work beautifully in your wedding photography. Just a little further afield, Norwich is surrounded by the beautiful Norfolk countryside and Norfolk Broads, home to a fine selection of barn wedding venues, old manor houses, hotels and churches.

Make Your Wedding Planning Easy

I love a church wedding. I married at a church wedding and I’ve photographed numerous church weddings over the years. What I’ve learnt from this is that by far the best option, if you want to take the stress out of your wedding planning, is to hold your wedding ceremony and wedding reception in the same location. Some things to keep in mind when developing your timeline include:

  • How long will it take to get ready (hair, make-up, dress)?
  • How long is your ceremony?
  • How long does it take to travel between your venues?

Choosing to have your ceremony and reception at the same wedding venue means that you will, naturally, have more time to spend with your friends and family rather than time spent on the road (and you’ll make a saving on the wedding car and your guest transport too!). It keeps things simple and makes the logistics for both you and your guests that much easier.

If a church wedding is on the cards, then look for a location that is close by to where you are planning to hold your wedding ceremony.

The writer and traveller George Borrow (1803-1881) wrote that Norwich is “A fine city whichever way you look at it” and as such, he is credited with coining the phrase, “Norwich – A Fine City”, I’d tend to agree! For a memorable wedding day, Norwich and the surrounding area are definitely worthy of your consideration, offering plenty of unique wedding venues and open spaces, the perfect backdrop for your Norwich wedding photography.

31 of the Best Norfolk Wedding Venues

Norwich and Norfolk are full of quirky outdoor wedding venues, barn wedding venues and country house wedding venues, to name but a few. So, if one of the hundreds of beautiful churches around the county just aren’t your thing, then there are historic halls, manor houses, hotels, gardens and even tourist attractions, such as Norwich Castle that you can take your pick from! Here's just a small selection for your consideration...

Voewood

Voewood is one of my favourite Norfolk wedding venues. A truly captivating place, it has to be seen to be believed. Hidden from sight in its own woodland, this stunning example of the Arts and Crafts aesthetic lies just outside Holt, a beautiful Georgian town, close by to the North Norfolk Coast. Although a rather grand house, in many respects, it is welcoming and unpretentious and lends itself well to couples wanting something a little bit different from their wedding venue. A Voewood wedding is something else!

Southwood Hall

A stunning barn conversion nestled within the beautiful Norfolk countryside. The views here are amazing and since the area is not at all built-up, a Southwood Hall Wedding boasts generous grounds and BIG Norfolk skies! artist impression of the Reading rooms wedding venue

Reading Rooms

New kid on the block, the Reading Rooms opened in 2017 but is quickly making a name for itself. It takes it’s name from having been a meeting place where people could learn to read and have access to books and newspapers. But it was also a place of entertainment with games, dancing and social events, including wedding celebrations. Recently renovated, it looks absolutely stunning with beautiful stone leaded windows and vaulted ceilings. Picturesque landscaped gardens and the Church of St Ethelberts, make for a beautiful backdrop to the venue too. An idyllic setting that provides a beautiful space for an outdoor ceremony as well. A venue I haven’t had the opportunity to work at yet so if you’re planning on getting married here, let’s talk! Well worth checking out!

Dairy Barns

It’s been a little while since I last photographed a Dairy Barns wedding but I’ll be there to kick of my 2018 wedding season! Dairy Barns is a wedding venue that is part of a working family farm. It has a warm and welcoming feel and the staff couldn’t be friendlier. Situated not far from the stunning Norfolk coastline at Sea Palling and Waxham and nestled within the Norfolk Broads near Hickling, it offers plenty of scope for your wedding photos. Fishley Hall Wedding Photography

Fishley Hall

I haven’t photographed a wedding at Fishley Hall … yet, but I’m very much wanting to. I was part of a team who did a fashion shoot at the venue just before it opened for weddings. It’s a great space for a DIY wedding! Within easy reach of Norwich and Great Yarmouth and just outside of Acle, Fishley Hall, is an idyllic barn wedding venue. If you’re after a church wedding, then it is ideally placed near by to St Mary’s Church of Fishley. Set in 350 acres of beautiful Norfolk Countryside, in the glorious Norfolk Broads, this working farm and its enchanting buildings make for a fantastic place for a Norfolk wedding! Being on the Norfolk Broads, if it floats your boat to do so, then you can stay on the river and even arrive at your ceremony by boat! It even boasts luxuriously well appointed, first class, accommodation!

The Old Grain Barn is a blank canvas that you can put your own creative stamp on but it’s a venue with plenty of space for an outdoor wedding in Norfolk too! Fancy an al fresco wedding, then Fishley has a civil licence for couples to get married outside on their lawns. For smaller groups then you can marry in the conservatory of Fishley Hall itself. In short, they have pretty much every base covered and it’s well worth a gander!

The White House at Sussex Barn wedding venue

Sussex Barn

One of the finest barn wedding venues in North Norfolk, Sussex Barn lies just outside Burnham Market, close by to the wild but absolutely stunning North Norfolk coast at Brancaster. A barn wedding venue, with something of an olde-worldy feel, it has some beautiful little spots for your wedding photography, including flower-lined farm tracks and woodland. One of my favourite spots used to be the derelict ruin of, what is now their luxuriously appointed accommodation, the White House. I can’t really blame them for this renovation, it’s an astounding rebuild – a 12 bedroom country retreat! And to make sure you’ll get the best night’s sleep before your wedding they have included sound-muffling on the doors and black-out curtains! Fancy arriving at your wedding on horse back? Sussex Barn is home to the Burnham Market International Horse Trials and as such, it’s equine accommodation is pretty sharp too!

Winner of the Condé Naste Top 100 Venues in the UK this is another Norwich wedding venue I’m looking forward to working at this year. The Boathouse

Another wedding venue local to me, the Boathouse is a really unique, waterside wedding venue.  Set in 11 acres of parkland on the banks of the Ormesby Broad, this is about as idyllic and romantic as wedding venues in Norfolk get! Indoor or outdoor, the Boathouse can cater for both and if you choose to, you can even arrive at your wedding ceremony by boat. If you prefer to arrive by car, then you can opt to have a boat ride after your wedding ceremony instead  – the Boathouse doing exactly what it says on the tin! a wedding in a back garden in Norfolk

Your own Back Yard

So, after all these options, if you’re still not sure which wedding venue is for you, there is another way! DIY Garden Weddings are some of my favourite celebrations. Because they usually take place at a family home, they are really intimate and welcoming. If you’re not sure about renting out a venue, then throwing a wedding celebration in your backyard is definitely an option you should explore! You’ll often save on venue hire costs which means, you can put the money you save toward your honeymoon, your wedding album or, maybe, just blow it all on a really great party! The possibilities are endless – one couple, I know, had a beach wedding not far from their home, the North Norfolk Coast was their backyard! If you’re after some more inspiration, other couples have hosted a wedding on a farm, a back garden wedding at their parent’s home and a wedding at a friend’s barn! Whatever you choose, a DIY wedding or, a Back Garden Wedding will be absolutely unique and personal to you!
